A via ferrata (Italian for "iron road") is a mountain route, which is equipped with fixed cables, stemples, ladders, and bridges. The use of these allows otherwise isolated routes to be joined to create longer routes which are accessible to people with a wide range of climbing abilities. Walkers and climbers can follow via ferratas without needing to use their own ropes and belays, and without the risks associated with unprotected scrambling and climbing.
Prerequisit:
Prior Rock Climbing and/ or Rock Scrambling experience a must.
You can NOT be afraid of heights!
Harnesses and helmets will be included!
Itinerary:
Depart from New York City 6.00 pm on Friday, May 8
Dinner on the road...
Saturday, May 9 - Climbing the Via Ferrata!
10am check in:
We will receive an orientation as well as all essential gear.
The round trip climb will take about 5 hours and we'll break picnic lunch on the summit.
We will be harnessed in at all times on this climb, but it is still a strenuous and steep ascend !
After the climb, we will enjoy dinner in town and back at the Lodge.
Sunday, May 10 - Hiking the Spruce Knob and Seneca Creek Trails
9.00 am depart cabins:
We will explore a trail that connects Seneca Creek to the summit of Spruce Knob.
The trail climbs 1,000 feet from Seneca Creek to the top of Spruce Mountain passing through hardwood forests and small clearings. Once on the ridge, the trail heads south for three miles before reaching the Spruce Knob Tower parking lot. Hiking along the ridge offers breathtaking vistas to the east and west. Blueberries, huckleberries and azaleas are abundant here. (6 miles)
Return: Dinner on the road… approximate arrival in New York at 10.00 pm
